Square Enix launches crowdfunding initiative

Square Enix Collective is a new community-driven crowdfunding feedback platform involving developer input from the publisher. For indie devs, it’s designed to bring attention to their project ahead of crowdfunding and source reactions from a gamer audience – Square Enix itself will validate whether submissions to the program have the development pedigree to make them a reality. Fans, meanwhile, get to be part of a curated platform for launching crowdfunded games.
It actually sounds a bit like a gaming version of Lego’s Cuusoo initiative, where projects that get the backing of players are the ones that succeed. Square Enix has teamed up with Indiegogo to oversee the projects that make it through Collective. Square Enix hints at the idea that developers will have the chance to work with existing IP owned by the publisher, too, and that more details will be made available on this at GDC next month. Of course, to work at all, it sounds like Collective will need to find a passionate and honest audience that’s interested in being part of the program, but the project alone is an interesting idea on the part of Square Enix.
