David Jaffe “I would have done a different story for God Of War III”
Outspoken videogame designer David Jaffe discusses his thoughts on God Of War II and III, and the direction Sony Santa Monica took the franchise after he left it behind.
In a frank and open discussion with games™, God Of War designer David Jaffe has discussed his feelings regarding the second and third entries into the bloody hack-and-slash series. According to Jaffe, despite enjoying both of Sony Santa Monica’s games, he wouldn’t have taken Kratos in quite the same direction if he had been in charge.
“I thought what Cory [Balrog, God Of War II director] did was awesome, was amazing,” says Jaffe. “There’s a lot of people who look at God Of War II as the best in the series. Although to be fair, you know, I always hate that, because it’s like, of course, because you’re building off the fuckin’ first motherfuckin’ game.”
“I was the creative director on the second one,” Jaffe continues. “I had my hand on it, but I think Kratos, his character changed more than I would have liked in the second and third games. Kratos isn’t a very nuanced character, but there was a little bit of nuance in him in the first one, and I think in the second one and the third one it became more about the rage and less about the other aspects of him that, for me, made him more well-rounded. I would have done a different story for GOWIII. I had a different story in mind. I loved God Of War III, I think the story they picked was awesome, [but] It just wasn’t what I would have done.”
