Deep Silver makes a real zombie killing machine, launches retailer promotion
Publisher Deep Silver has teamed up with a custom vehicle specialist to build a real-life zombie killing pickup truck.
It’s based on a Ford Ranger pickup and sports armoured windows, spiked wheels, a front barricade and even a rear-mounted mini-gun.
The machine will be appearing at a number of events and promotional shindigs. Those who spot the truck are invited to tweet pictures using the #RiptideTour hashtag for which they will be rewarded with unspecified prizes.
Furthermore, Deep Silver has promised retailers who construct the best Dead Island window displays a visit from the machine. Promotional packs can be requested at RiptideTruck@deepsilver.com.
“The truck is the perfect tool to help us push the Dead Island Riptide brand,” Deep Silver product manager Nick Turner stated. “Pickup trucks play a large role within the Dead Island series and we’ve brought this to life by building our own fortified truck.”

Dead Island TV ads will reach 3.5m gamers
Koch Media’s TV campaign for zombie sequel Dead Island: Riptide will focus on male gamers.
A big TV push will reach 3.5m men between 18 and 34, while the broader activity will reach out to fans of the original game plus cult horror enthusiasts.
Ads for the game will also appear on cinema screens, key specialist and lifestyle sites and Riptide will be sponsoring a 12-hour zombie movie marathon in London.
“Dead Island has been a consistent performing line since its launch, recently surpassing the five million global sales mark,” said Koch Media UK marketing manager Peter Ballard.
“The Dead Island community is hungry for the launch of Dead Island: Riptide. Coupled with a killer mass-market campaign, we expect Dead Island: Riptide to be a ‘trend bucker’ once again.”
Koch Media is also embracing unorthodox PR activity including a zombie wedding launch party and a tour of UK shopping centres for the Dead Island truck and Zombie Killing Machine.

So Deep Silver went ahead and shipped the Dead Island Riptide Zombie Bait Edition regardless
“We sincerely regret this choice.”
Those were the words of a Deep Silver rep in January of this year following the backlash that greeted its unveiling of the Dead Island Riptide Zombie Bait Edition.
For those who don’t remember, the SKU comes bundled with a bust of a dismembered female body. Or as MCV described it “a model of some tits on a mutilated female torso”.
Deep Silver’s response at the time was as follows: “We deeply apologise for any offense caused by the Dead Island Riptide Zombie Bait Edition, the collector’s edition announced for Europe and Australia.
“For the limited run of the Zombie Bait Edition for Europe and Australia, a decision was made to include a gruesome statue of a zombie torso, which was cut up like many of our fans had done to the undead enemies in the original Dead Island.
“We sincerely regret this choice and are committed to making sure this will never happen again.”
So sincere was that regret that Deep Silver has now gone on to release the SKU anyway. The game is out this Friday and reports are already hitting the internet of consumers who have received their Zombie Bait Edition, torso included.
So if the publisher doesn’t regret its choice, isn’t deeply sorry and isn’t fussed about it happening again, then what conclusion are we left with? That MCV and every other outlet that reported the news has been played?
A Deep Silver statement issued to CNet reads: "An extremely limited quantity of the Zombie Bait edition has been made available to some retailers for those customers who wish to purchase it"
