Ubisoft revealed Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon today, a standalone spin off coming May 1 for Xbox 360 as a digital download.

First teased on April Fools day as an “80’s VHS vision of the future”, the tease was followed by neon draped screenshots and a three-track EP from Melbourne electronica group Power Glove.

Set on “a bizarre open-world island” Blood Dragon is going to let players “experience every cliché of a VHS era vision of a nuclear future, where cyborgs, blood dragons, mutants, and Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, Navy Seals) collide.”

Starring Michael Biehn then, Blood Dragon will take us back to a stylised vision of 2007, where we play as “Sargent Rex Colt, a Mark IV Cyber Commando who’s fighting against a cyborg army gone rogue. Your mission: get the girl, kill the baddies, and save the world.”

With gamers still waiting on DLC for the 2012 shooter, this might strike some as an odd release – though we can’t wait to jump in on the carnage. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon doesn’t require a copy of Far Cry 3, so all players can enjoy the sci-fi carnage when it launches later this year.
